U18 Indoor Hockey National Finals 2020

11th January 2020

After remaining unbeaten in the North East and North finals, the U18 Indoor Squad emerged as North Champions 2020. As a result of this they qualified for the National Indoor Finals, hosted at Bromsgrove School, as one of the top 10 schools in the country.

Although they lost their first 3 pool games to some tough opposition, including both the National Champions and runners up, their final game against Dean Close highlighted their resilience and determination to succeed. Although they found themselves 1-2 they quickly scored and restored the balance in the game and finished with a draw against a tough side which was very well deserved.

The overall standard of Indoor Hockey was exceptional with a wealth of talent on display. Although the pace was challenging, our U18 squad portrayed a united front and relished the challenge of competing against the overall winners and runner-ups of the competition. Congratulations to all of the players involved led by their Captain Alex Middleton. She led by example, providing exceptional support and guidance to Lucy, Leah and Jess who had stepped up to the U18’s team despite only being in Year 10. This is a fantastic personal achievement for these girls who have made a seamless transition to the senior indoor team.

The whole team should be congratulated for their work ethic and sportsmanship throughout the finals. The attacking unit of Olivia, Alex, Jess & Bex were on top form, demonstrating excellent pressing and making leads to create fantastic goal scoring opportunities. Our goal keeper Taryn was consistently tested at every angle and made some exceptional saves including a penalty flick against St Georges. Her constant vocal presence and support to her team mates was invaluable in the latter stages of the matches.

Indoor Hockey continues to grow at WGHS and we would like to thank the girls involved in the final for their unquestionable commitment to Indoor Hockey this year. If you would like to get involved, practice is on a Monday 4.15-5.15pm in Hartley Pavilion. See Mrs Morgan for more details.
