Classics Trip to the Bay of Naples

During February half term the Classics Department travelled with 42 Year 8 girls to explore the Bay of Naples. The girls and staff tirelessly explored the well-trodden sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, witnessed the now customary gladiatorial combat between the teachers at the amphitheatre and sampled proper pizza margherita in its home city of Naples after exploring the treasures of the National Archaeological museum. In addition we also take the girls to some of the less well-known sites around the Bay, and this year we visited the villa at Oplontis that has been linked to Nero’s wife Poppaea, and the remains of the notorious playground of the Roman elite at Baia. Sorrento again served as our base and the girls enjoyed the delights of some tourist shopping and Italian gelato.
