Guidance and Support

There is a big difference between studying for GCSEs and preparing for A-Levels, and at WGHS you will develop the skills you will need to become academically confident and independent, an important stepping stone to university and later life.

You will be helped and supported every step of the way, not least by the close involvement of your Personal Tutor who will give you 1:1 guidance and support throughout your two years in Sixth Form, and who you will get to know really well as a mentor.

Great importance is placed on preparing students for life after Sixth Form through a comprehensive careers programme. In Year 12 students have a timetabled lesson with the Head of Sixth Form, who provides an overview and guidance on researching opportunities for university and beyond. The Assistant Heads of Sixth Form and Head of Careers are always on hand to offer advice to students, and Sixth Formers have ready access to both the Careers Library and the portfolio of information relating to university Courses and Careers for reference in the Sixth Form Centre.

Through-out a student’s time in the Sixth Form, they will also have the opportunity to listen to speakers who come to discuss a range of lifestyle issues, especially through the Careers Programme and Barbara Hepworth Lectures.

Students also receive preparation for additional university tests including Oxbridge, BMat and UKCat and there is a programme of practise interviews to allow the development of interview skills and techniques available.
