Music is an important and central component of the life of QEGS. As a curriculum subject and as a flourishing extra-curricular activity, music involves pupils in a wealth of enriching, challenging and enjoyable activities.
Music within the school community is underpinned by a simple philosophy - music is for all to enjoy, to be involved with and, for many, to achieve excellence. QEGS provides an abundance and variety of musical opportunity with jazz, rock, funk, blues and classical ensembles constantly evolving.
There are over thirty ensembles rehearsing on a weekly basis. These range from the large groups including several choirs, concert bands, guitar groups and orchestras to the smaller ensembles such as chamber choirs, saxophone, flute, clarinet and string ensembles.
Musical talents can showcase their work in a variety of ways, ranging from formal performances and composers’ concerts, to lunchtime recitals and school assemblies.
Alongside our biennial Musician of the Year, many of our musicians also have the opportunity to go on a foreign tour with their ensembles and choirs. The Foundation Chorus recently visited Italy, performing at a number of venues, including in the famous Basilica San Marco, Venice.
Choral groups and concert bands, many of which operate jointly with WGHS, give performances of the highest standard. Groups regularly qualify for the prestigious National Festival of Music for Youth as well as achieving successes in local and regional competitions. Each year we are privileged to welcome performances by a variety of musical ensembles including graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music and the Leeds Chamber Orchestra.
The chance to collaborate with local and touring international bands also arises, adding that extra dimension to musical life at QEGS. Swing Foundation, the Foundation’s Senior Big Band Jazz Ensemble, has earned a local and national reputation, performing at many venues including the highly-acclaimed Wakefield Jazz Club and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
