The Department believes that every boy should have access to a wide and varied experience of as many cultures as possible. The learning of new languages and cultures should inspire boys to be adventurous in spirit and to embrace all that is unique about the many cultures that make up our world. Through their language lessons they should begin to understand the importance of effective and sensitive communication and always strive to achieve their best.
The Department aims:
To develop the ability to use a MFL effectively for purposes of practical communication
To form a sound basis of the skills, language and attitudes required for further study, work or leisure
To offer insights into the culture and civilisation of the countries whose languages we teach
To develop an awareness of the nature of language and language learning
To provide enjoyment and intellectual challenge
To encourage positive attitudes to foreign language learning and to speakers of foreign languages and a sympathetic approach to other cultures and civilisations
To promote learning skills of a more general application (eg analysis, memorising, drawing of inference, use of ICT, dictionary skills).
To enable our pupils to achieve their full potential in examination success in MFL
