Ethos of the Department

The Department seeks to help to contribute to the School’s ethos of providing a holistic approach to education. By delivering varied and interesting topics across each key stage of the curriculum, it is involved in the teaching and learning process of all students at QEGS in KS3 and it is a popular option choice for both GCSE and A Level. The Geography Department seeks to enhance the geographical knowledge and skills profile of every student involved, and to enrich the whole Schools’ understanding of its place in the wider geography of Wakefield, West Yorkshire and the World. Above all the department look to engender a passion amongst the student body for finding out about geographical issues and the changes that happen and develop around them every day.

Specific geographical skills we seek to develop include:

  • Develop source handling skills through the study of a varied range of geographical sources
  • Improve analytical skills through recognising differing opinions, attitudes and values.
  • Improve research skills and encouraging pupils to learn independently
  • Develop written and oral communication through practising extended writing tasks and providing the opportunity for engaging classroom discussions
  • Improving fieldwork and investigative skills and working in team situations
