This school-based service aims to work in partnership with girls, parents and teachers to improve and maintain the health and wellbeing of all girls, enabling them to reach their full potential.
Mrs Joffe is the full-time School Nurse. The School Medical Officer Dr Fyfe, who is a local General Practitioner, attends on a weekly basis. The First Aid Room equipped for triage, and the Sick Room (2 beds) are located together within Cliff House at WGHS Senior School.
The service offers health advice to girls and parents, coordinating first aid provision, supporting girls with medical conditions, undertaking health checks where indicated and offering confidential emotional support.
The School Nurse and the School Medical Officer also contribute to the Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum programme.
An immunisation programme, coordinated by the Wakefield Primary Care Trust, is also available for girls. We strongly encourage all girls to be fully immunised according to NHS guidelines, and we are happy to discuss and advise on any immunisations that they may have missed. During Year 8, girls will be offered the Cervarix vaccination (against HPV) and in Year 10, a booster against Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio (Revaxis) will be offered.
It is intended that this service should in no way replace your General Practitioner who would, normally, retain sole control over any prescribing for girls; although some referrals to other health professionals can be made via this service.
