Wakefield Girls’ High School

Careers

Ethos of the Department

From Years 7-13 we hope to equip girls with the tools and knowledge they need in order to direct their abilities and interests into suitable careers.

We aim to provide information and impartial careers advice so that girls are able to make informed choices about their future education and career pathways.

The Department is fortunate to have close links with local businesses through the ISBP (Independent Schools' Business Partnership).

Project Acorn

Project Acorn is a careers project which seeks to simulate as much as possible the "real world" experience of work, from recruitment and selection to appointment and training. Employers from the ISBP offer placements with prescribed job descriptions and person specifications which are advertised and to which the girls apply. Often selection takes place by interview at the business premises. The successful applicants then undertake a work placement which "mirrors" actual positions as much as possible. In other words, Project Acorn offers the girls a comprehensive insight into the multi-dimensional workings of the labour market.
