50s/60's/70's Reunion - Saturday 16th June 2012 2013 London Dinner - March School Officials Reunion - June (Ex-Head Girls, Deputy Head Girls and Senior Prefects) Past Events Noughties Leavers Reunion - 24 September 2011
Over 80 former High School girls attended the inaugural reunion of those who left WGHS between 2000 – 2009. Although the day was a time for reflection and recollection of their favourite High School memories and experiences, it was also an opportunity for us to to celebrate their subsequent achievements in a rich variety of careers and professions; not forgetting their roles as wives and mothers. The youngest attendees were 5 week old twin girls! The day began with a drinks reception, followed by a buffet lunch in Jubilee Hall and a tour of the school; the latter proving to be especially popular with many ‘girls’ apparently reluctant to leave the premises when it was time to close the day! In retrospect the event was a thoroughly pleasant occasion for all the staff and ‘ex-girls’ who attended. All of which augurs well for the continued evolution of WGHS in-touch which has future events planned for Oxford in February 2012 and a summer reunion for leavers from the 50s, 60s and 70s, probably in June 2012. A London based reunion is also anticipated in 2013.
1980s Leavers Reunion - 11 June 2011
On Saturday June 11th, 105 guests attended a reunion for the WGHS ‘leavers’ from the 1980s. As former pupils streamed through the front door of the school, (delighted at being able to use an entrance barred to them during their time at school) many took a peek in the Head’s Study and swapped memories of the ‘walk of shame’ from the door to the Headmistress’ desk, if they had been in trouble! In the wider context, this was the decade of Margaret Thatcher, yuppies, chunky mobile phones, the Falklands war, Charles and Diana’s wedding, ‘Dynasty’ shoulder pads, big hair for women and mullets for men, Band Aid, Kylie and Jason, Rubik’s cube and ‘My Little Pony’! In school, the decade saw many changes and events: the naming of the Beaumont Building in 1982 after the eponymous clerk to the governors; Miss Hand’s retirement and Mrs. Langham’s arrival in 1987The Ideal Home-style exhibition in school, appropriately entitled, ‘A Home in the Eighties’ in March 1983 and of course the ever-popular Charity Fayres and Sponsored walks. The ‘old girls’ fondly remembered the sports played, life in the Sixth Form, school trips, the costume collection, inspirational teachers, summer dresses, school productions, sitting O and A levels in the Gym – but first and foremost, the fun, laughter and lifelong friendships forged in their time at the High School. Following an emotional rendition of the School Song and Grace, a most enjoyable lunch was had by all, after which the ‘girls’ toured their school again, evoking many happy memories. The affection with which the ‘girls’ looked back upon their school days and the high regard they continue to display for WGHS was both palpable and humbling. It was a pleasure to reconnect them with each other and the school, and we hope this is merely the first of many Reunions they will be able to attend.
Head Girls' Honours Board unveiled at a special celebratory dinner for Former Head Girls on Saturday 21 May 2011
This dinner, to celebrate the unveiling of the Head Girls’ Honours Board, was always going to be special, with its perfect menu, impeccably decorated and be-flowered Jubilee Hall, illustrious company and mutual love of all things ‘WGHS’. 19 Ex-Head Girls, ranging from the 1952 post-holder to this academic year’s, walked through the front entrance of their alma mater and stepped into a world both familiar and yet different. Although many years and even headmistresses separated them, their role in school and enormous affection for it, united them in an instant. After Cava and canapés in the Archive corridor, the Head Girls took to the stage once again in Jubilee Hall for the official photos. The School Song was sung, grace was said and the dinner commenced. The air was filled with animated conversations and, above all, laughter, as tales were told and memories plumbed! Before the Honours’ Board was unveiled by Mrs Carol Otley, Mrs Wallwork and then Carol, (nee Nettleton, Head Girl 1952) spoke about the importance of Head Girls to the life and history of the school and of the highlights that the year spent as a High School Head Girl yielded. The grand unveiling then ensued in a paparazzi-style flurry of photos as Hattie Jones presented a posy of white roses to Carol as a token of appreciation for a job exceedingly well done. The evening concluded with the Head Girls thumbing through the ‘Note Books’ books from their time in office and sifting through photographs and magazines from their era. Some then wandered through the corridors they had walked so many times in the past, before saying ‘au revoir’, rather than goodbye, to the school which was, and will forever remain, theirs.
