The Biology department aims to excite boys and inspire an appreciation of the living world around them, a sense of wonder at the complexity of life and it’s interactions with the environment. The department is a friendly, supportive one where boys find staff approachable and knowledgeable. The courses followed in all years are based around a wide range of activities, from the traditional dissections and microscope work to debates, posters and presentations.
We aim to develop their learning skills so that they become better learners and take more responsibility for their education. We encourage their curiosity and enjoyment of biology with a hope that they carry this on throughout their life. Education about their health and how they can affect it is covered several times throughout their time in biology and the ethical issues raised by technological advances are also debated. As boys get older we spend time preparing them for the examinations they will take, the aim being to allow their knowledge to be best displayed rather than teaching to the exams. Finally the department supports boys in their quest for careers and particularly those biology-related courses which many of our boys follow.
