Design Technology

Ethos of the Department

Design and Technology provides opportunities for students to explore the exciting and creative world of design. By guided application of the Design Process they carry out initial investigation into the problem, study existing products and produce a range of original and practical ideas of their own.

Study introduces modern technology, materials and processes including CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) and a broad range of complementary skills to allow fully functioning solutions to be produced to a high standard by the students.

Key Facts

  • Students are taught by well-qualified, experienced specialist staff supported by a dedicated technician
  • There is a multimedia workshop for KS3, with a main manufacturing workshop for KS4 and KS5
  • The second workshop includes a range of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) CAM machines
  • A high proportion of students go on to study Engineering or Design related courses such as Architecture
  • Students experiences are broadened through trips and entering local and national competitions
  • The Department encourages participation in the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship Scheme
